The Brief History of the Elmhurst Christian Gospel Church
According to the American Census Bureau, Elmhurst, Queens is the most diverse ethnic groups in America. Even though they are only 2.2 square miles, we have more than 123 ethnic groups coming from all over the Globe. From the year 1996 to 1999 within these three years, there were over 30,000 legally new immigrants (not include the illegals) settling down in Elmhurst to pursue their American dreams. By that period of time, there were over 40 to 50,000 Chinese immigrants, about half Mandarin and half Cantonese speaking in our community. There are about six Mandarin speaking churches. Our church was the first Cantonese speaking church in our community.
Thank God for leading The Rev. and Mrs. Willy Kwong Ng to plant a church in Elmhurst. After spending over half year in searching, we started our first Sunday Worship Services on Mother’s Day Sunday on May 11, 1997. We rented a storefront on 90-20 Corona Ave. Elmhurst which costed us $1650 a month.
After seven years in our renting space, God provided us with a better, bigger and more suitable building just right across the street. We bought our new church building on 90-41 Corona Ave., costing us $600,000 for the building and another $100,000 for the renovations. Finally we started using our new church facilities on April 4, 2004
After another 14 years, in 2018 we decided to add one more floor on the top of our current building. We also renovated the whole building from basement, the first floor which is our sanctuary and second floor. Right now we have a new third-floor as our church offices. The total cost for this whole project was about half million dollars. We started utilizing our brand new facilities on the first week of October 2019.
We have been asking God to bring more new converts and Christians to our church to serve Him together, to share the gospel to our community and to edify ourselves spiritually.
To God be all the glory!
